Robert Trent Jones Sr. — His Vision Course

Most golf courses are commissioned. Ipswich Country Club was a personal obsession. Robert Trent Jones Sr. — the architect behind more than 500 courses worldwide — identified this stretch of North Shore Massachusetts land and held onto it for fifteen years before building. When he finally broke ground, he had already spent over a decade imagining every hole.

The result is a course that feels unusually deliberate — every contour, every bunker placement, every green complex reflects a vision that had fifteen years to mature. Set in one of New England's most storied coastal towns, with the Atlantic influencing conditions year-round, Ipswich rewards players who respect the setup.

The greens are characteristically Jones: large, undulating, and with collection areas that will collect. This is one of the architect's most personal works, and it plays like it.
